Bolz Bolz
Andreas Bolz aka "Bolz Bolz" has been an active player in the formation of the German electronic music scene for over 10 years. His achievements are many, including many vinyl releases, countless CD compilations and three project-based longplayers. In the early nineties Bolz Bolz dropped into the Techno scene with his first project, Formicula 4, which was a collaboration of the renowned artists Voigt (Mike Inc.), Burger (Modernist), and Lutterman (Rootpowder). Formicula 4 toured in many German cities and released three Maxis on the labels PBI and Transatlantic.
In 1992-93 Bolz Bolz formed the Techno projects Car & Driver, Middle Income, and Roots, which were released by and became representative for the Techno label Force Inc Records. Four Car & Driver Maxis were released on Force Inc, one Middle Income Maxi on Communism Records and finally one Maxi from Roots on Force Inc and Adam & Eve Records. With their live performances Car & Driver gained national and internationally attention. With Twin Drive, an Acid solo project, and Slime Slurps, a Breakbeat collaboration with Air Liquide's Cem Oral, Bolz Bolz also released on Structure Records and Mono Records.
At the New Music Seminar 1992 in New York, Bolz Bolz represented Cologne’s underground as a DJ in legendary venues such as Tunnel, Limelight, and The Palladium.
In 1995 together with Georg Lutterman, the founder of Formic Distribution, he originated the labels Formic Records and Electrocord. Formic Records served as BB's platform for Techno releases, while Electrocord (as the name suggests) concentrated on varying styles of Electro. With his Electro project Third Electric BB released a number of Maxis and kept himself occupied with the obligatory DJ and live performances. In 1996, after the first limited Label Compilation CD 1000 on Electrocord, in 1997 the Berlin based label Studio K7 released the second Electrocord compilation CD2000 and organized a tour throughout Germany. Through the establishment of Electrocord, BB came into contact with the Detroit Electro scene. Bolz Bolz first appeared as a solo project on a Single on the Detroit based label Ersatz Audio.
With his second project Funktaxi, founded in 1997, Andreas Bolz created another style that was more in the vein of Listening Electro Music with the influence of Jazz. Funktaxi released four vinyl EP’s and 2 CD Albums on the label Electrocord and on his own in 1998 founded label World Electric. The launching release of his and Adult’s remixes Music, the main track from an earlier BB EP on Ersatz Audio, was a great success. In combination of the establishment of the label World Electric and with his own releases Andreas Bolz has become one of Germany’s finest electro producers.
Bolz Bolz’s releases have been described as "Future Retro", but being so prolific it is almost impossible to categorize. BB gives an example how Old School Electro has been developed into New School Electro. He creates a platform for international New School Electro artists to release their music suiting the distinct style of . Artist like Plasma Co.Adam LeeMiller (Adult) - Detroit, Chromatix, – New York, Satamile, Andrew Price – New York, Oliver Dodd - Atlanta, Scape One, Kurt Baggaley – West Susses UK, Komatro:hn, Tomas Nyström – and the project Volsoc – L.A. were signed. Andreas Bolz’s contact to the US and UK electronic musicians has grown to an important procreative cooperation.
BB’s tune Take A Walk in 2001 provided with its minimal construction and dirty sound a contrast to the all-too-prevalent over-produced and semi-commercialized Techno of its time. Bolz Bolz released his album Human Race on the German Label Feis. Several Remixes from well known Techno and Electro/Breakbeat artists like Si Begg, Justin Berkovi, DJ Bone & La Monde, Dima (Vitalic), Paul Daley (Leftfield) helped Bolz Bolz to establish his reputation. His latest release Warrior EP on World Electric (out in June 2003) showed the consequent development of Bolz Bolz’s very specific and unique understanding of Electro. Since 2002 Bolz Bolz has been living and working in Cologne, Germany and New York. He will be moving to London in 2004. Currently is producing his upcoming album that will be released 2004.
